PossAbilities educational consulting and advocacy services provide support and information that enable you to become your child’s best advocate at school. Parents intuitively know and understand their children the best. My goal is to help parents clearly articulate their child's needs in order to request and access services they are entitled to. I help parents resolve problems and maintain positive relationships with the school professionals. I coach parents in order to empower them to speak for themselves and their child so that they can participate as a contributing member of the team.
I coach students in order to empower them to understand their own learning profile. I want students to take responsibility for their learning so they can advocate for services and supports that they need in order to succeed. I believe strongly that once children become old enough (varies depending on the child) they should be an integral part of their learning and involved in creating their IEP.
Parents clearly want what is best for their children. When raising a child with any learning challenges or exceptionalities, fear and uncertainty can shake a parent's confidence. Well educated, highly motivated and loving parents often find the role of advocating overwhelming and insurmountable. Effective advocacy requires knowledge of the special education services available and the ability to clearly articulate the child's strengths and needs. I teach parents these skills to rebuild their confidence.
My unique approach to advocacy looks at the big picture. I help parents prioritize what services they should be accessing in the community. I coordinate information and recommendations from doctors, psychologists and teachers in order to create a plan of action. I connect families with experts in the fields of speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, behavioural therapy, social work and psychology and then oversee the team to make sure that all professional members understand what the others are doing in order to best service the whole child.
I also understand that learning happens in all aspects of the child's life, not just at school or at home. Finding a great extra curricular activity is also an important component to a well rounded, calmer child. I help families find good fit extra curricular activities that match a child's interests and that will set the child up for success.
Focusing on good habits is also something I can help parents with at home. I believe that eating well, sleeping well and exercising well, all work together in creating a calm, healthy and more manageable environment for everyone.
